Why Men Prefer Pretty Faces

So you think beauty is in the eye of the beholder? Think again. According to new research from the University of Exeter in Great Britain, the preference for pretty faces over ugly ones is embedded in our brains from the moment of birth and possibly prior to birth.

Newborn babies come fully equipped with built-in preferences, including a preference for an attractive face, that help them make sense of their new environment, report the BBC News Online and Newsweek magazine. The Exeter researchers showed more than 100 infants two images that were placed side by side. One was of an attractive face, while the other was a less attractive face. The babies, ranging in age from five hours old to two days old, spent about 80 percent of the time looking at the attractive face, while barely glancing at the unattractive face.

"You can show them pair after pair of faces that are matched for everything other than attractiveness. This leads to the conclusion that babies are born with a very detailed representation of the human face," Dr. Alan Slater, a psychologist at Exeter, explained to the BBC News. Why would infants have this capability? "It helps them to recognize familiar faces--particularly that of the mother--and it helps them in learning about the social world. Attractiveness is not simply in the eye of the beholder, it is in the brain of the newborn infant right from the moment of birth and possibly prior to birth," he added.

When those babies grow up, the preference for pretty faces doesn't change. And it crosses all cultures and geography as well. When an insular European is shown the faces of two Africans, the one he chooses as most attractive is also the same one an African chooses. And it works the other way around when an African is shown the faces of two Europeans.

"Although we think that standards of facial beauty vary over time and culture, they don't actually change that much," Slater explained to Newsweek. The evidence indicates that there is a biological and universal standard."

So don't blame a man when he can't help but look at a pretty face! He's biologically programmed that way.

Can you find a study that explains why I love big breasts and great legs as well? I need to show that to my GF....

biological imperative for continuing your lineage, vin. Studies have shown (I'm not kidding) that bigger breasts and a certain waist/hip ratio suggest fertility to men's hard-wiring. And a fertile spouse is who you'd seek to hook up with in the old days, before you got killed by a sabre-toothed tiger or stomped on by a mastadon.

Anyway, that's what I read years ago... it was probably an excuse for the researchers to go to 'gentlemen's clubs' and ogle women though.

My penchant for big breasts is most likely because I wasn't breast-fed as a baby.... At least, that's what I tell Mrs. Bond.

I've heard that before, and it makes sense. But it just reinforces my skepticism of my friends' choices of boney, boyish-shaped girls.

a HUGE gaping hole in the test... Attractiveness is still a subjective variable. Who determined that the faces the babies chose were attractive?

What a waste of money, as it proved absolutely NOTHING!! (except that maybe the babies and testers had the same taste in women )

    </font>
Actually there have been psychological tests showing what is considered attractive in adult men. Stuff like higher cheekbones, thin eye brows, and other characteristics were rated as desirable.

So this study may have built on previous studies of what is desirable in adults and checked to see if babies responded the same way.

    Just a thought, who knows.

I've heard something similar, but they say attractiveness is based on symmetry. The more symmetrical the face, the more attractive.

I think that they have a group of adults look at the faces independently and rate them for attractiveness.

I recall reading about a studdy in which coolege women were asked to rate the attractiveness of men i various pictures. The pictures were of the same man, but he was dressed very differently from picture to picture, i.e., business suit in 1 pic, Burger King uniform in another. The women consistently chose as most attractive the pictures in which the guy was dressed in a manner which suggested that he earned a good living. I'll see if I can dig up the study.

right, but those former studies showed what many people thought was attractive. This study is saying there is a genetic predisposition to enjoy pretty things vs ugly, while pretty and ugly are not scientifically quantifiable variables. Beauty is relative, not definite.

And in some parts of the country, relatives are beautiful.

Capp is right. I can't seem to find a link to the study, but the one she is referencing was groundbreaking in that it was done across cultures. Cultural norms for beauty are completely different, and even within cultures, those norms have changed over time. But the measure of symmetry seems to override any cultural preferences in determining beauty. Of course, cultural anthropologists will say that symmetry is a proxy for good health/genes and, therefore, good offspring.

Anyway, this particular study measured faces (actually images of faces) for symmetry and correlated that with preferential selection (i.e. 'are they attractive?') and found that the symmetry trumped even cultural factors.

One thing I remember from the study was that the man with one of the most symmetrical faces was Denzel Washington... women across cultures found him attractive (although my wife begs to differ). Catherine Deneuve was the woman with the very symmetrical face (I 'aint gonna argue )

I'll see if I can dig up a link.

hmmm I guess I would find assymetrical features rather odd - maybe something like Sloth from the Goonies?

You can BET that the cosmetics industry has done a LOT of research in this area. There are definitely some basic traits that are largely considered "attractive" although you can always find exceptions.

    Capp is right. "

Oh no doubt! I've heard of the study as well... I just don't think its quantifiable in regards to this study. "What do people consider most attractive?" is rather different from "Babies are more responsive to attractive people vs. ugly people".

Sharkbait, I think the article addresses your concern when it states, "And it crosses all cultures and geography as well. When an insular European is shown the faces of two Africans, the one he chooses as most attractive is also the same one an African chooses. And it works the other way around when an African is shown the faces of two Europeans.

Maybe we can apply the symmetry study to these results, but what is interesting is the same result across cultures. Meaning not that beauty is the same across cultures, but that relative beauty is definable across cultures.

Anyway, all this is only about looks, and we know that beauty goes more than skin deep (as we all head to the gym, almost obsessively ).

So this one African determines which is most beautiful... I just don't feel beauty is quantifiable enough for a study.

And no, beauty is only skin deep, and i am perfection

Just kidding... have a great day Kaiser!!

Think of the baby as the unbiased observer... They were drawn to look at the attractive faces...whose common feature was symmetry...aka attractive
