I saw a report on sharks at some popular surf beaches in California. The surfers didn't seem to mind them too much. They referred to them as "men in grey suits" to keep other people from freaking out.

There are always sharks around, and anyone that has spent much time at all surfing knows this.

Couple of years ago I was out in the water around Santa Monica and saw a rather large man in a grey suit (with white belly) jump clear into the air and flip over, just like on National Geographic. A whitey had been spotted in the area for a week or so but nobody seemed to mind much.

Red Bull has hosted a couple contests on that SA reef I believe. Lots of famous spots in that part of the world.

There are definitely sharks everywhere, and I don't ever think about them while I'm in the water at the beach. Growing up on the beach and fishing and surfing for so long I've seen what comes out of the ocean. With that said, I'm very hesitant to get in the water when I'm offshore precisely because I have seen how many predators are out there and how quickly they will attack something.

Maybe it's just my perception, but SA seems to be one of the more dangerous spots for surfing. I know white sharks are up and down the US west coast too, but I've always thought SA to be worse.

Another from SA. This does not look like it will end well.

He's on a tow in board, notice the foot straps. Given that people can do flips and stuff on a board like that he might make it.

Speaking of big waves, our hurricane Irene swell should start tomorrow and really get pumping on Thurs. Hopefully she keeps turning E and throws off swell without the added wind. If the weather is okay, I'll take my camera out and get some pics in between surf sessions

I have only flown the trainer kite a bit, so no I don't currently kite surf. I've been thinking about getting into it but 1) it's expensive even to just start and 2) many of the beaches are make rules against it b/c most people have zero control. I know I HATE surfing when some idiot kite surfer is zig zagging all around me with some kite and wires etc...

Yeah, Lisa I spent almost 2 years exactly in CO. It was fun to snowboard and hike, but since I grew up near the ocean the draw to get back was just too much. I'm fortunate enough to work at home so I can live anywhere. I just moved back to Charleston and already have a hurricane swell to surf lol. Funny side story, all my possessions are somewhere in a POD right now except a few clothes, my laptop, and my surfboard.

Yeah I hear you on the expense. I've done the tourist surfing thing in Maui a few times and really enjoyed it. My husband is a windsurfer from way back & loves it. Enjoyed surfing but really wants to learn how to kite sail/surf. There's a beach on Maui called "Kite Beach" and we hung out there a couple afternoons checking things out. The lessons were around $1400 for 3 mornings ... a bit steep.

    Some pics from Irene...

First, an initial band coming ashore:

Second, shows just how nasty is was on Friday morning. Since there is no perspective it's hard to tell that wave was 8-10ft big.

Video from Tahiti in link below -

    Holy Shit!

The dude that loses it ~0:38 gives you a sense of how fast that water is moving.

Thanks for posting that video Nate.

Having taken even puny 10 foot waves on the head I don't know how the hell anyone survives a beating like that. I'd rather get hit by every NFL lineman at once then be swallowed by one of those monsters and slammed into the reef.

In the pic set from Surfer, they show one guy that lost his shorts and another girl that was being helped by the medics.

I'd want the biggest baddest hotrod of a PWC if I were the tow-in guy. The guys that get in front of one of those waves on just a board have to be just the absolute best at what they do.

It's always a thrill to be out in the water and watch dolphins or seals surf. They are the real masters.
