    The Olympics!!

I think we need a thread to discuss the upcoming Olympics. Is anyone else as excited as me? I think the Lochte/Phelps rival-competition will be very exciting. Check out this video....

    The Olympics!!

Awesome video! I think Lochte and Phelps will dominate men's swimming and hopefully their rivalry will result a a few new world records.

I am also excited about the upcoming games. I was fortunate enough to be at the Athens games to watch my son compete for the USA. It took him 16 years and the help of literally hundreds of coaches, supporters, sponsors, team mates, and friends to get to Athens. For those who only see the games every 4 years it is difficult to comprehend the training load that elite athletes must carry day after day and year after year. In a few weeks the USA will send a team of around 500 athletes to London. While they will represent our very best; I also think of the thousands that didn't make the cut that are out there still working hard towards a goal that very few will ever achieve.

What did your son compete in?

I also like watching the Olympics. There is a lot of passion and heart in the athletes and that really comes out at the Games.

He competed in sprint canoe; an obscure sport in the US but big in Canada and Europe.

I was watching the swimming trials tonight and Phelps and McGill put down the two fastest times in the world this year in the 100 m butterfly. Lochte came in third and in his interview he said he had started training for London this morning and was a bit tired for his final trials race. US Swimming is a model for sport development. Their programs touch every pool in the US. They are a machine when it comes to developing elite swimmers. Can't wait to see them bring home the medals.

    The Olympics!!

Love the Olympics, especially the individual events, like swimming, weightlifting, boxing (when it isn't rigged!), gymnastics, and track and field.

But I admit I have complicated, conflicting thoughts about the team-sports competitions. On the one hand, it bothers me that baseball and softball aren't part of it. On the other, I kind of resent seeing NBA superstars in the Games. Don't they get enough accolades in real life? On the third hand, I enjoy any chance I can get to watch the world's top soccer players, especially the U.S. women's team.

I go around and around, arguing mostly with myself. I think boxing is better because we don't have the top pros competing against everyone else's amateurs. But even our top pros can't compete in men's soccer, and I'd have no interest in the competition at all if the rest of the world's top pros weren't involved.

And I'd absolutely love to see a baseball tournament in mid-summer, where the world's best AAA talent competed at the time of year when ballplayers are actually in top shape. The U.S., Japan, Cuba, Dominican Republic and maybe Korea and Venezuela could have a hell of a competition just by ourselves, with future superstars all over the diamond.

David, that's very cool that he competed in the Olympics. Not many of us humans get to that level. What a great experience for him.

We are a little sad the Dara Torres didn't make the team. We were pulling for her. She is a great athlete. We had the opportunity to watch her do some rehab training in our gym last year. Her rehab was a tougher workout than most folks attempt on a PR day

I love watching all the athletes, but I have a particular affinity for the equestrian events... and I love that it's the only Olympic sport where men and women compete equally against each other.

We are very excited in my department at work. We will be holding a watch party to cheer on our co-worker Gwen Jorgensen as she competes in the triathlon!

    The Olympics!!

We had a great time when the Olympics were here in 1984. Between events I attended and those my family attended we saw: baseball, dressage, judo, parts of the cycling road races and team handball (that I can remember). And my sister & BIL participated as folk dancers in the opening ceremony.

I would have liked to see badminton - it's a wicked game when played well. Have fun!

Is everyone watching? Danny Boyle is the Art Director of the opening ceremonies. Wow! It's spectacular and weird and cool.

Not on here for another 50 minutes or so. I'm still getting ready

I have Cox Cable and they have an NBC channel that shows the feed from six NBC related stations for the Olympics at the same time and you can navigate around to hear the audio from whichever you like. This will come in handy for avoiding soccer.

    Support Sarah Robles

Sarah is an Olympic Weightlifter (in London, now) who needs sponsorship support. The story is worth a read, and Nike could do a great thing by supporting this female athlete.
