With Collins coming out, you think this will open the doors for others? Kerry Rhodes comes to mind. Wondering how the players will react on his team. Personally I think most Americans are either forward thinking enough or socially liberal that this shouldnt be too big a deal. What do you guys think?

EDIT- Should have titled it First gay male athlete to go public, I am sure he is not the first athlete who happens to be gay.

He's a free agent, and he intends to continue playing. I wonder if he'll be able to hook up with a team. Kobe has tweeted his support for Collins. Kobe has really stepped up his support for gay rights since he blurted out that anti-gay slur a year or two ago.

I was wondering about the FA part. I mean for a 34 year old 2-3rd string guy whose career averges are 3.somthing points and rebounds I think he would have been out of the league after this year before coming out. Probably why he did now, I mean what at this point does he have to lose? He either can move on to the next step of his life without having to live a lie, or put himself into the spotlight and getting teams to look at him one last time for a guy that was on borred time anyways.

I'm sure others will be coming out soon. With Brendon Ayanbadejo being such a huge supporter of gay rights, I'm sure a football player(s) is right around the corner.

Congrats to Collins and I hope others can follow suit. About time.

Let's be clear - you're limiting your "1st" status to just the big four sports. There have been many many others in the past in other sports.

You are correct, but because this is the first to do so in the big four which is why it is such a big deal.

I really is a big deal, and I hope it give others the courage to do the same. I think it will, ultimately. Before this announcement, the rumor was that a group of NFL players were going to come out together.

^ this. Nobody should have to live a lie just because they are in the public eye. And Collins did it smart, on his way out of the league so if there were any issues that would come up, it cant really effect him at this point and now there is a precedent.

Yep, I see it as sort of a transition step to having an active player come out. There have been retired players do it, and now we have a mid-30s free agent who probably was unofficially retired because he wasn't going to be picked up. But it's a good step.
