    Lettered Side Down.

I've noticed that any time we're instructed to place a plate on the floor we are instructed to do so "lettered side down".
Our plates are lettered on both sides. Can I just set one on edge?

But seriously is there some secret to this?

    Lettered Side Down.

It could be an reference to a recurring joke about whether to load plates with the letters in or out. Discussed here

Or it could be that plates that are lettered on one side are generally flat on the other - so if you are going to stand on one, flat side up would mean lettered side down.

HA! Very nice. I now know who the site historian is and all future questions will be directed to you Lisa. 7 years is a millennium on the internet.
