which by the way, I rocked. I don't know why I was nervous -- those young kids ain't got nothing on me. It's so nice to be too old to care what anyone thinks about you except you. )
EXCELLENT! And I'm right there with ya on the who cares what anyone thinks!! LOL

Thank you, everyone, for checking in and for ALL the super words of encouragement. I need them some days, like these days when I'm feeling a little overwhelmed trying to find my groove with the schoolwork load and the home life. (I'd quote and reply to each one of you individually, but time is too valuable these days ). I miss being able to be here so much, keeping up with everyone, and all that. Someday I'll sit and have a big ol' catch up day, until then:

    NROLFW
    Stage 7
    Workout 6: Tuesday, 1/24/2012

    BB Deadlift
    135 x 8, 155 x 8

    DB Squat, Heels on plates
    20e x 20 (x 4 sets)

    DB Shoulder Press
    17.5e x 15 (x 4 sets)

    Step-ups
    20e x 15 (x 3 sets); 17.5e x 15

    Underhand-grip lat pull
    70 x 15 (x 3 sets); 55 x 15

15 minute walk on the treadie

NROLFW COMPLETE! Will spend the rest of the week in "recovery," keeping up some walking. I will begin Power Training's 4day push/pull on Monday.

Fitness assessment tomorrow morning for health class. Fitness level determined by time to complete a 1.5 mile run OR 1 mile walk. I'm personally praying for rain. I loathe doing anything outside in the cold. Additional tests for the class will include leg pressing and bench pressing and pushups.

    Congrats on finishing!

And BOOOOO for the run/walk and leg press. Also, I don't really see the point in the bench AND pushups...they're really similar. Seems they could pick one or the other and go with something different for the 4th test, maybe some sort of flexibility test or something.

And not only did you finish it, you did the whole thing through. Even stage 6! I cut 5 short, never did 6 and subbed exercises in 7.

    Congrats!!!!

Bench press was for maximal strength and pushups were for endurance (amrap in 1 minute). They did have a flexibility test, but it was a box test: basically, put your feet against the box and push the lever to see how many inches you can move the lever. Hello!!! The long armed guys reached way further than me, assessing them as higher flexibility even though they just had long arms.
The whole test today was kind of a joke. I think I take the class too seriously. In fact, at least compared to most of my classmates, I take ALL my classes too seriously. Benched at 95# for 5 reps though...and we had to use NASM charts for estimated 1RM, for safety. So, I still don't truly know my bench max. Pushups were a BIG JOKE: instructor wasn't monitoring and form was so sloppy. Hey, if I did pushups without having to break the plane of my elbows or keep my butt down, I could bust out over 50 as well. Makes me so stinking mad. But I have to remember: this is just a class. I'll make my "A" and move on.

1 hour walk on the treadie this morning (3.5-4mph pace) then other various movements (pushups, additional track walking, bench pressing in the health class.

    Power Training
    Strength -Week 1: Push/Pull
    A1 Push: Monday, 1/30/12

    Deadlift
    (165 x 2, 160 x 4), 160 x 6, 155 x 6, 155 x 6

    One-Arm DB Incline Bench Press
    20 x 6, 22.5 x 6, 25 x 6, 25 x 6

    Push Press
    65 x 6 (x 4 sets)

    Seated Russian Twist
    20 x 10 (x 4 sets)

    Three Point Plank
    30sec (slippery floor, boo), 45s, 45s, 45s

Good workout, glad to be back in the gym after the recovery week. First workout of PT means I'm breaking in and still getting used to what heavy is for me on some of these exercises. But look at those deads. And if I had better grip strength, I might could have held on to that 165 for all 4 sets.

It's 7a my time, and I'm off to catch my classes for the day. FYI: 5a gym time wasn't so bad to make happen, yay!

You are amazing strong on those DLs! Congrats! As an aside, you do know it's okay to reset and regrip in between pulls, right?

Yes, exactly what NMNM said.....you come to a dead stop between each rep and that's when you can regrip.

I do reset between each pull. I think the 165 was a little ambitious to be honest. And after 4 sets of 6 of the DL, my hands get slippery too. Ick.

Great pulls! And I agree with Jane, get your self some chalk! Are you using a mixed grip?

I do use a mixed grip. Maybe it is more of a strength issue (in my arms and such) than a grip issue. I don't think my gym allows chalk - there's no signs prohibiting it but there's no chalk either and everyone else just wears gloves-, but I do have one of those chalk bags. It's weird to carry it around though, since I'm trying to not be seen with the chalk. I have the linx grips, but when my hands get schweaty, they don't really help.

Arm strength shouldn't have much to do with it.....just think of your arms/hands as hooks.

If you wanna work on your grip though, pause at the top of each rep and just hold. I honestly have never felt that my grip was an issue no matter how much weight I've had in my hand or how many reps I'm doing, and I wouldn't say I have freakishly strong forearms or anything. Chalk is my friend!

farmers walks are insane for grip strength too. i have only been doing them for a few months and i have zero issues with other lifts now, knock on wood. 'course i'm not DL-ing as much as you yet... :tongue

why do you choose a mixed grip rather than both overhand?
