    I spend some tmie in another forum and the same thing is always popping up "just want to tone" "Don't want to get all muscular". I actually started a thread asking what the facts were that were indisputable, irrefutable and that we could all agree on. So far we have 6 things.

    Someone told me that she didn't really want to bulk up, she wanted more of a dancer's body type, and I told her that it comes down to genetics and it doesn't matter what exercises she does, if she's not built that way, it isn't going to happen. She stopped exchanging comments with me after that. :P

    (I suppose there's the argument that to some extent you can alter your body shape through exercise selection, but that's still going to be within the range allowed by your genetics. My 'long and lean' is still going to be pretty bulky compared to someone who is naturally more of a ballet dancer body type.)

    I think it doesn't help that there is a very small number of women out there who do bulk up easily (for women) without working super hard at it. Not to bodybuilder standards by any means, but bulkier looking than many women prefer/the media says is the 'ideal'. It's just part of the genetic distribution - there are women who have to really struggle to maintain any kind of muscle mass, too, and probably could only get bulky with, uh, hormonal 'assistance'. Most women fall in the middle, but they see a woman who has worked really hard at it, or they see one who runs more bulky in general who starts exercising and it's like the muscle is there overnight, and they freak out.

    But if you talk to the women who are on the 'bulk easily for women' side of things - most of them have been like that since they were kids, pretty much. They've NEVER been long and lean or 'slim' because they're just not built that way, even when they're out of shape. So it's not like it's a huge surprise when they start working out and they get more shape and definition.

    I'm afraid you'll find many people on forums or just in life generally, who are happy to talk in an authorative fashion on subjects they know very little about (no doubt regurgitating some outdated information someone told them or that they overheard). Fitness seems a subject that particularly draws a lot on misconceived ideas from people who think they know better.

    The reason for this phenomenon is the learning curve that each individual follows that has 4 levels:

    1. Unconscious incompetence. The individual does not understand or know how to do something and does not necessarily recognize the deficit. They may deny the usefulness of the skill. The individual must recognise their own incompetence, and the value of the new skill, before moving on to the next stage. The length of time an individual spends in this stage depends on the strength of the stimulus to learn.

    2. Conscious incompetence.Though the individual does not understand or know how to do something, he or she does recognize the deficit, as well as the value of a new skill in addressing the deficit. The making of mistakes can be integral to the learning process at this stage.

    3. Conscious competence. The individual understands or knows how to do something. However, demonstrating the skill or knowledge requires concentration. It may be broken down into steps, and there is heavy conscious involvement in executing the new skill.

    4. Unconscious competence.
    The individual has had so much practice with a skill that it has become "second nature" and can be performed easily. As a result, the skill can be performed while executing another task. The individual may be able to teach it to others, depending upon how and when it was learnt.

    An expert is usually at the fourth level after many years of practice (usually after 10.000 hours). The people that know almost nothing about a subject (like nutrition or exercise) are at the first level and they don't have a clue about their incompetence because it is "unconscious". Thats the reason of their "Authoritative fashion".

    The only thing you can do for them (except avoiding them) is to spend allot of time (hundreds of hours or more) providing knowledge without complaining about their nonsense until they move on to the second stage and realize their deficit. At the second stage they will be open to new ideas and will learn faster.

    I rarely debate fitness, nutrition or diet anymore. When some one asks me how I lost the weight, I tell them. When someone asks me if I exercise, I tell them I strength train.

    Usually they want to get into a big debate about my nutrition plan and my choice of exercise. I just tell them it works for me, I'm healthy and happy.

    For the record, I am a maintaining lifetime member of Weight Watchers, although I do eat more protein than they recommend. But, hey it works for me.
